Muffins, cheesecake and bagels all enjoyed big sales gains in the 52 weeks ending May 20.

Muffin sales jumped 12.1 percent to $901.7 million during the period, according to retail data from Chicago-based market research firm IRI.

Refrigerated cheesecake sales rose 8.3 percent to $301.2 million, and bagel sales increased 6.5 percent to $889.2 million.

Other bakery categories that saw gains during the period include cookies (3.1 percent), cakes (2.4 percent), pies (2.1 percent) fresh rolls/buns/croissants (1.5 percent), fresh bread (.7 percent) and donuts (.5 percent).
