Hawaiian sweet bread specialist King’s Hawaiian has settled a lawsuit over the use of packaging by another bread company that King’s Hawaiian argued resembled its own.

Under the agreement, St. Cloud, Minnesota-based Pan-O-Gold Baking Co. will change the packaging of its sweet Hawaiian rolls, which Torrance, California-based King’s Hawaiian said was too much like the packaging of its popular sweet Hawaiian dinner rolls, which are marketed in instore bakeries.

"We are very pleased with the settlement and the resolution of the lawsuit," says John Linehan, King's Hawaiian’s president and chief strategy officer. "We believe our packaging trade dress is distinctive and famous. The King's Hawaiian packaging is a very valuable asset to King's Hawaiian.”

King’s Hawaiian has filed and settled similar lawsuits in recent years against Sprouts Farmer’s Market, Alpha Baking Co. and Aldi.
