Independent Chicago grocer Treasure Island Foods, a pioneer in deli prepared foods, is closing its doors.

Signs posted in Treasure Island’s six stores Sept. 30 announced that the chain would cease operations Oct. 12, according to a story in Forbes.

Treasure Island opened in 1963 with a focus on imported specialty foods and later became a “grocerant” pioneer with its retail foodservice offerings.

“We have done everything we could to attempt to get the company on solid ground to try to operate for another 55 years,” CEO Maria Kamberos said in a letter quoted in the story. “Unfortunately, given the current industry conditions, it has been impossible for us to continue to operate without losing money.”
