Department store giant Kohl’s plans to lease unused space in its buildings to grocery and convenience stores.

As the Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based chain downsizes some of its stores, it’s looking for partners in the food industry to fill the empty space, according to a story on cnbc.com.

Kohl’s has “right-sized” about 300 of its 87,000-square-foot box stores in recent years, according to the story. Adding a grocery store or a c-store would help generate additional foot traffic at Kohl’s, Kevin Mansell, the chain’s CEO, told CNBC.

"If we had our preference, we are going first after well-capitalized companies, and preferably ones that have high traffic in grocery and convenience," Mansell said.

The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based retailer has already identified a list of potential partners, according to the story.
