CHICAGO — Specialty Bakers is reintroducing a higher-end version of its mini pie two-packs.

The Marysville, Pennsylvania-based company initially introduced the pack, which contains two 5.25 in pies, in 2016 but had to stop production because of capacity constraints, Randy Smith, Specialty Bakers’ vice president of sales, said at the annual Private Label Manufacturers Association show in Chicago. “We took time off to rework it,” he says.

The premium product has more fruit and less dough than a typical “commodity” pie its size, features a lattice topping and is clean label, Smith says. “It’s designed for smaller households with discerning palates,” he says.

The pies are being marketed mainly to instore bakeries, Smith says. Specialty Bakers’ branded sleeve for the product slides off easily if retailers want to substitute their own labels, he says.

Several varieties of pie are available, including strawberry, apple, triple berry, bourbon pecan and salted caramel.
